Everything I Do Is For The Gaze
An artist and her gallerist clash over a proposed exhibition of male nudes. 
Roisin and I, frequent collaborators, wanted to explore how the female gaze contrasts with the male gaze, which led us to imagine a story about two women drawing a nude male model and examining desire and objectification. As we talked further, we recognised that our desire wasn’t so literal, prompting research into how the male form has been represented in art history and revealing that most fragmented depictions of the male body were created by men, with little from female-identifying artists. Studying the male nude over time exposed shifting layers of eroticism, shame, and censorship, and both the film and drawings probe these themes, lifting shame through a childlike, high-key palette. Creating the illustrations became such an enjoyable habit that I almost forgot they were originally intended only as set material for the film.

British Summer TimeThe great ‘British summer’ is a fleeting affair; it’s over before it even begins. But much like anything that alludes us, the magic of its temporariness persists and gives both hope, opportunity and nostalgia. For Tiny and Charlotte in British Summertime, this is the prevailing notion - that the chance they’ve been able to meet and connect is something truly special but it certainly won’t last forever. This film was shot on a shoestring budget run &#38;amp; gun, on location in Margate, over the course of three jampacked intensive days. We battled with three types of weather which certainly evoked the underlying message of the story and gave us the true ‘British Summer Time’ experience. Our first day was battered by a storm and though we were filming in July, it easily could’ve been November considering the types of winds and cold hail we were dealing with, while trying to manoeuvre a large group of school kids between locations and shelter. Only on the third day did the weather start to improve, and by this point we had to grab all the shots that we could that would actually resemble that warm summertime feeling we were hoping for that - the magical and temporary British heat. 
Ironically only a week later did Margate succumb to a vibrant heat wave that saw the beach become completely overcrowded. One benefit we did have from shooting in the abysmal weather was that the beach was completely empty so we were lucky to have the locations to ourselves.

A self critical woman struggling through a break-up visits her mum’s beautician for a valentines day wax. The beautician acknowledges her despondency and seeks to enlighten her to the powers of manifestation and specifically the teachings of Neville Godard, all whilst legs-akimbo on the waxing table.

AELLA embodies the essence of the wind; restless, elusive, and perpetually in motion. Driven by a deep-seated fear of stillness, she seeks refuge on the coast, where she attempts to bury herself in the sand as an expression of frustration. In the midst of this turmoil, an agoraphobic woman observes Aella’s manic movements on the beach and descends to offer solace. Initially cold and distant, Aella gradually softens in response to the stranger’s compassion and the unexpected comfort of shared presence takes over.

A ROOM BY THE SEA&#38;nbsp;A woman leads an isolated, but contented existence in her coastal apartment. She finds peace in the nuance of small details and takes time to reflect on her journals. She poeticises her experience of watching the sea and the sky change tone and colour day after day from her window. But she never leaves the interior space. Who is she?
The title reflects Virginia Woolf’s essay ‘A Room of One’s Own’ which discusses the need for female creativity to thrive in a safe, private space of one’s own where it can be cultivated and nutured. The interior space of the home is warm and encased, womb-like. Out there the great expanse of ocean, and what it means to look out upon it.&#38;nbsp;

Beyond Desire is an experimental short about female desire,&#38;nbsp; shame and betrayal.&#38;nbsp; Drawing from a highly personal experience we follow a vulnerable young woman experiencing a breakdown via a collision of conflicting relationships and gender power struggles.

“The survival brain(as opposed to the social engagement's learning brain) is hyper-focused on perceived threats, thinks about things in hard-and fast black and white, and is often circular, obsessive, and panic driven. We are very fearful about making mistakes. We thrash around, break down, or shut down when we fail. We pass that vagal response as an energy to those around us in social interactions, and others experiencing our social behaviour response then mirror this activated state back to us, keeping us stuck in a stress-response and leading us along a path of emotional addiction.

When trauma is not properly addressed it is left to drive our narratives and shape our autonomic responses. The brain learns to crave the feelings associated with the trauma response. This is the loop of emotional addiction. We now need to seek out the same kind of emotional hit again and again. Even if an emotion makes us stressed or sad, it often feels familiar and safe because it provides the same type of release that we experienced as children.”Using physicality, haunting sound design and immersive camera work as vessels for intimate, multi-layered and unerringly contemporary story telling. Our lead finds herself on a repeating loop, the end is the start as she oscillates between what was and what is. Is she unable to escape her trauma and her psychological suffocation or patterning? The movement echoes the work of Pina Bausch, and in doing so draws links to the expression of the feminist landscape of emotions and gender conflicts that we continue to work through.
 

	The piece is choreographed by the brilliant Katya Bourvis, who recently won awards for her film MYRRHA. The score is by the enigmatic Alex Stolze. Cinematography is by the acclaimed Oscar Oldershaw.

	Delphyne: Short Narrative 15min

A young girl is awakened to her burgeoning womanhood after an incident causes her to reassess her reality, which coincides with the beginning of her first menstruation. 

Delphyne (meaning ‘womb’) discusses the stigma around menstruation. Addressing shame and acceptance, taboos around menstrual blood are told through a fabric-themed metaphor, and the conflict between a mother-daughter relationship; to find a shared unity and language to beat the conflict which projects itself in the shame metaphor that they’ve unwound and removed from their life. 

The historical connotations of staining, feminine purity and the divide between private and public space as well as ownership of the body come into play. The coming of age theme is reflected in reference to her struggle with the self (alter-ego), struggle with the ‘other’ (male influence) and struggle with the home (her Mother). 

The script is stylised in a theatrical form, taking the works of Russian writer Ludmilla Petrushevskaya as a background. The tone draws on Petrushevskaya’s depictions of intense female-driven, claustrophobic family relationships particularly between generations of women who pull at each other in close quarters. There is a fairy-tale element to the progress of the film, akin to the works of Petrushevskaya, and relating to my own Russian heritage and sense of displacement. I wanted to echo that in the nature of rural Suffolk and tie in a local folk atmosphere and elements of tradition, creating a strange bridge between Russian culture and rural England in the film; through the folk music, costume, focus on nature and element of ‘period’ where the setting appears timeless, caught between present day and an undefinable past. Through this lack of definable period/era to the film, I wanted to express how the issues around female bodily shame persist through the ages, and that the depiction of female physicality and sexuality still sits within an archaic framework.

CLEAN Set in a the dramatic red-world of a theatre, CLEAN is all about the contrast between the intimate backstage world, (the inner-self)&#38;nbsp;and ‘putting on a show’.&#38;nbsp;Heather in the backstage world is in a surrealist realm of Hollywood Glamour and cabaret inspired decor - satin and drapes and styled in pearls / long gloves, dramatic dress.

The backstage world is the intimacy and privacy of your own thoughts - the beauty of preparation, the ‘talking to yourself in the mirror’. Then Heather and the band are taken into the bright-harsh lights of the stage - the need to put on a show.We&#38;nbsp; showcase the feeling of conflict between on-stage and off- stage. The private vs the public - the public persona onstage where there’s the need to be perfect and ‘clean’ vs the true-to-life realities of fame.

Back-stage we are inspired by the look of old-hollywood glamour and cabaret, the femme-fatale. Our surrealist, key moment is an ‘America beauty’ sequence - a fantasy dream sequence of red rose petals falling onto Heather, suggesting her status as an icon&#38;nbsp;
